An Independent Review Organization (IRO) typically includes consulting, CPA, or law firms. These entities will usually possess the essential knowledge and expertise in healthcare compliance and regulations.
It’s crucial to understand that the Office of Inspector General (OIG) does not endorse any specific entities as IROs. Nonetheless, the OIG maintains the authority to approve or disapprove an IRO based on essential factors. These include qualifications, independence, and, in certain cases, the specific credentials of the IRO's staff. This is to ensure that the IRO team has the professional expertise necessary for conducting thorough and accurate compliance reviews in line with the requirements of a Corporate Integrity Agreement (CIA).
